Home & School E-News August 2009

Dear Parents,

As usual, the summer has flown by and it's time to start a fresh, new school year at St. Rose.  As our faculty and staff return to their classrooms to prepare for the excitement of the "first day" next Wednesday, let us all pray for a great start to a school year filled with learning, laughter and love.

Don't forget to mark your calendars for upcoming important dates:
  • New Family Orientation - 7pm this Wednesday, August 12th in School Cafeteria
  • Back to School Open House - 9am-Noon on Sunday, August 16th
  • First Day of Classes - Wednesday, August 19th - Noon Dismissal
  • First FULL Day of Classes - Thursday, August 20th
  • Curriculum Night - Wednesday, August 26th, 6:30pm in School Chapel - Meet the teachers and learn about what they have planned for their students this year.
We are looking forward to another great year with our Shining Star students, teachers and families at St. Rose Philippine Duchesne Catholic School.

All are welcome - we really mean that! As always, we'd love to have you join us at our monthly Committee meetings on the second Wednesday of each month at 7pm in the Cafeteria and, of course, at all of the fun events planned for the year.

It's Volunteer Signup Time.

St. Rose Philippine Duchesne School has MANY opportunities for parent involvement.  At the beginning of each year, the Home & School committee asks each family to complete the Volunteer Service Opportunity form, which helps us to organize our event committees and ensure that we have plenty of help where it is needed.

To make it as easy and convenient as possible for busy families, this year you have three different options for completing this form.

1) Complete the form online - take a few minutes right now to look over your calendar and decide where you would like to help out this year.  Then, you can cross this task off your to-do list and recycle the paper form that you will receive in your Back-to-School packet.

2) Complete the paper form - if you prefer to stick to pen and paper, simply look for the form in the packet that you will receive at Open House or on the first day of school.  Please return the paper form to the school office no later than August 31st!

3) If you'd rather skip the form altogether, please visit the Home & School table at New Family Orientation Night and/or at Curriculum Night on Aug. 26th.  We will have a sign up sheet for EACH volunteer opportunity, as well as someone who can answer your questions about a particular event or service opportunity.

Please help us get off to an organized start, and take a little time to let us know how you want to be involved!

Aluminum Cans -  Continue to save your aluminum cans and deposit them in the bins at church or school all summer!  Even if you now have the new recycling curbside service at your home, please consider reserving your paper and aluminum to deposit in our school's recycling bins.  The Home & School Committee budgets recycling revenues of over $6,000 each year, and we hope we can continue to count on everyone's support to maintain this easy fundraiser!  Again, all proceeds from the aluminum cans are used to purchase technology-related resources for the school.  If you have questions about this fundraiser, visit www.recyclechallenge.org or contact Brenda Podry at 314-837-3410.

MyCokeRewards for Schools: If you drink Coca-Cola and are looking for something to do with all of those Rewards Points - you can now donate them to St. Rose School.  Visit www.mycokerewards.com/schools and choose St. Rose as the school you'd like to support. You can also save your codes and turn them in to Home & School so we can enter them for you. We can use the reward points to redeem for sports equipment and other school resources.

Box Tops for Education: Don't forget to save your box tops - easy money for our school!  Stay tuned as the school year begins for information about classroom collection contests.

GoodSearch: Here's an EASY way you can help earn some extra cash for our school!  Go to  http://www.goodsearch.com/?charityid=873892 and choose St. Rose Philippine Duchesne Catholic School as the school you'd like to support.  Then, everytime you search the web use GoodSearch and St. Rose will earn a penny per search.  It may not sound like a lot, but the pennies add up quickly.  If we had just 100 people using Good Search for only 2 web searches each day, we could earn more than $700 for our school in a year - and the sky's the limit - the more searchs, the more we earn.  It's truly effortless - we can get paid for something you probably do daily anyway!  So please start using GoodSearch today. And, spread the word to Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, Friends and Coworkers who may be willing to use GoodSearch to benefit St. Rose too!
